Day 18: 40.8 kilometers (with a 4k out and back looking for a lake)
Total: 553.7 kilometers
Waking up to my favorite some by Ed Sheeran; Thinking Out Loud, I sprung out of bed eager to get out of the city! It was a car filled walk leaving the city even at 630am! I got one more look at the cathedral and headed out. The city part really never ended it just went from city to city. Luckily I ran I to my friend Rob from the Netherlands. He was getting money from an ATM as I headed past then he yelled my name and then we walked together. It made the city walk fly by talking with Rob. It was such a nice morning. He likes to get up early too which I thought was awesome. Even more awesome is that he does yoga. There are people you meet in life that you just talk to and feel like you have known forever, that is how Rob is. I hope to run into him again and see him again down the road! That inspired me today to stop and do a little stretch yoga twice already before lunch! It is a beautiful thing and I may have to keep doing it from now on multiple times a day!
So as the sun rose over the mountains, I parted ways with Rob taking the scenic route. It was truly beautiful. All around was pure and magical! I love being out in the fields with the birds and the sun and the wind! So peaceful! After a nice walk I made it to Mazarife! I stopped at the local market for a Gatorade to mix with my water and a beer! I stayed and talked to shop owner for a while and it was fun! We laughed and talked all in Spanish by the way with a smile and a stamp in my passport to remember this spot I was off! I stopped just few hundred meters later at a park with kids play equipment and such. There I put my bag down and did some yoga and stretching and push-ups! 100 done today by noon! Perfect! Then I cracked open a beer and just shut my eyes with my face towards the sun! The difference between the cold beer on my lips and the warm sun rays glowing on my skin was incredible! I could of stayed there forever. Then out of nowhere comes my friends from the other day Kevin and Steph from Minnesota ! With big smiles on their face they came by and we chatted a bit! They said they loved my hearts on the trail and were excited to be following me. Always can tell when I’m ahead because the hearts are out there. We laughed and smiled and they headed out. I had to stay a bit to enjoy this perfect moment in time with the sun the birds the beer the everything ! I feel life! The essence of life and it is so incredibly beautiful! I hope all who see my hearts on the trail take a moment to be in that exact moment and feel the essence I do! It’s amazing!
I had a great time walking after that! It was another 10k to Villavante and then another 4k or so to Hospital de Orbiga. I whistled a lot today and snapped a bunch too! I was in my really happy mood being in nature. I made a bevy of hearts today because my heart was shining and I wanted others to feel it! I was just feeling great. My feet were a bit tired and I was a bit hot from the sun so when I heard the rushing waters in the canal I knew I had to put my feet in. After 5 minutes my feet were completely numb! It was exactly what I needed today. After a revitalizing soak I headed back to the trail and was at an Albergue in no time.
The bridge coming into town was beautiful! Has a nice look to it and looks like they are doing a bunch of work around it to preserve it more. I found an Albergue that was open and grabbed a bed and took a shower. The hospitalero still wasn’t there so I headed out back into town to relax and explore a bit too! So after basking in the sun with a nice beer I headed back to the Albergue and you will never believe it! GianMarco and Martha and Anne were all there! I moved my bag into the room they were in and then we all headed back out for dinner. It was so nice seeing them again! GianMarco has been walking hard to catch up to me and I think he over did it a bit because he was walking pretty painfully. It was still great to see him! He is on schedule to be in Santiago because of a flight back home so I have it in my calendar and hope to meet him in Santiago. Martha and Anne are doing awesome except for some sore legs and blisters but I love how they have yoga pose pictures everyday! They are beautiful people! We went to a local restaurant and we all ordered the menu de Peregrino. It was funny because we ordered spaghetti carbonara! It was ok but Gianmarco really knows how to make it a million times better. As we were finishing up a group of pilgrims came in! It’s Carlos from lunch the other day after the Calzada Romana! I have been bumping into him and his crew a lot! It’s so cool! He likes my photos and I think that is awesome! I snapped a photo of his group as we were leaving! If you guys come online and see you picture leave a comment!
On June way back to the Albergue I saw the biggest dog! GianMarco and I stopped and petted him and the dog started jumping up and down. The owner did not get mad but just gave me the leash and said go! It was amazing! I sprinted back and forth with this huge dog bounding around me and jumping up on my shoulders! It was one of the coolest moments! It was so much fun! I always like to enjoy the moments I am in! Well for me and the dog we enjoyed that moment! We all left smiling and GianMarco and I headed back to the Albergue. After a little online time I headed to bed for a well needed rest! Can’t wait for the morning! I am heading into more nature in the next few days! Super stoked! Pura Vida y buen camino! Adventure on!!!!!
