Day 24: 34.1 kilometers
Total: 781.8 kilometers
Today started off wonderfully! I slept in past when I usually sleep and just enjoyed the extra hour! It was nice and quiet in this beautiful pension I stayed in and just what I needed! I woke up at 730 and read a little bit with my feet up the wall then packed my stuff and headed downstairs to the bar for a cafe and croissant. What a great start. After that I headed out into the misty morning. I saw a monastery just of the route and went to check it out. It looked closed but I went in the front doors anyways. I was reaching for the handle to the door to go in when it opened and a guy let me in! He said welcome and feel free to explore! Talk about perfect timing! The inside courtyard and it reminded me of the temple of the sun in Cuzco. Crazy thing is that this guy that let me in was from Cuzco and knew exactly what I was talking about! Whoa times a million! What a cool morning. With that I headed out if the city and onto the trail as the sun burned through the misty fog.
I was walking and saw many people today. The most yet on my camino and it was a little distracting because I love my time alone in nature to think and be with nature and hearing these people talk sounded like fingernails on a blackboard… I breathed a bit and let it go then it wasn’t so bad. I talked to a few people here and there. I had a good time talking to some guys from Vegas. Then I met a nun in training named Julia and a deacon named Matt from Seattle who lived in Rome. It was all good and as the day went on people stopped for lunch at restaurants and I kept moving along. At one moment I looked over at the exact moment as a bird next to me in a tree sneezed then looked at me. I stopped and smiled and said Salud! I swear that bird looked at me and smiled! Then I smiled even more and moved along and he chirped and flew along too!
I walked along a bit more and then started to get hungry so thankfully I packed that ready to make bocadillo! I waited for the right spot and boy oh boy did I find it. Just off the path in a beautiful field overlooking Portomarin was the spot of spots! I walked through the field and sat down in the beautiful grass! This was it, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, the line trees around me basked me in their sweet pine scent, and I was in my own little paradise! I cut open the bread and layered on the jamon the opened the avocado and put the whole thing on it. It could have very well been the best meal I have head yet! So simple so fresh so perfect and with such an amazing view! I ate just about half then just laid back. I was so comfortable and so in peace that I fell asleep for over an hour! I woke up sweating terribly and sat up ate the rest of my sandwich and then packed up to head out to town. It was such a perfect break and I loved every second of it even though it greatly enhanced my tan lines!
From there I headed across a beautiful bridge into Portomarin and went up into town to mail out some postcards. It was a nice town with many little shops and albergues but I was still eager to see more trail. I’m not walking too much, I’m just enjoying my walking! Walking is my meditation and I walk to what my body feels. Today my body felt great! On the way out of town I started up a beautiful trail that headed up for a while. A little into it I met a nice guy sitting in the grass reading a book. I stopped and talked for a bit. He was 62 and from Canada. He walked the Portuguese route and came a little this way to check it out and was heading back to Santiago before he headed home. It was nice to talk to him. He would walk for an hour or so and then sit down and rest. So peaceful right! I said I was going to keep going but I was sure to see him again by the next town. So off I went on the beautiful dirt path in a wooded paradise!
As I was walking I was just thinking and enjoying my time. I was actually thinking about making a heart out of some sticks and tying it into a tree. No more than a few steps later I walked into a stick that was half a heart perfectly! This had to be a sign! I put my bag down and pulled out my extra paracord and started tying away. When I had the heart together the Canadian guy came up and was like I knew that was you from talking to you earlier. He liked my heart and sat down behind a tree to take another break. I was looking for a place to hang it and the tree he sat behind had the perfect spot for it! Thanks to him for bringing my attention to the perfect spot I hung my heart in the tree! It was beautiful! Around 2 meters in height and almost that in width, so I hung it in the tree. I had a little extra string left and I thought what would be good right here. Plop! A huge pine cone dropped next to me and I knew that was another sign that the pine come would be the finishing touch! Whoa! Am I dreaming or what?! How is all this happening straight from my mind to my world? It made me think. I remember Alan Watts and other reading I have looked through and realized that I am the universe. I create everything that happens. Sometimes it is a bit harder than others but when you are flying so free with the purest intentions, magic can happen. Im not saying I can control everything but quite a lot. Like right now I really want to talk to one of my best friends but I can’t just wish it and make that happen because it’s not me and also it is a bit selfish to want something like that. The things that come almost too easy are done for the pure joy of making someone else that I may not even know smile and feel some love. Those hearts I draw are packed with much love for anyone to take and are also have my intention set behind them. I hope it changes people’s lives and hope my intentions blaze through the universe and come true all the time! Acts of random kindness! How cool is that? What if we made that our goal every day. Nothing big, nothing to be bought, no stress or worries. Just some random act of kindness like opening a door, helping someone in need, a smile to someone you don’t know. Maybe that smile or that door is all they needed to change the course of their entire life! A friend posted a video a while back of this guy who did many things like this not because he had to but because his heart was great. I love that video and it makes me smile every time I watch it. If you read this, try and do something simple and nice for someone today and see how you feel. Every heart makes me smile. Every time I hear about someone who has seen my hearts and it makes them smile or laugh or hug me, I fly higher than I ever thought I could. Heel slap chest pop happiness movement! It’s free to participate in and it will change your life! Tell your friends about it and let’s send a new vibration around the world! Whoa! That was a lot!
So after all that I was almost finishing up hanging my heart and Kevin and Steph from Minnesota came by! I love this couple! They are so nice and I feel their positive energy when they are near! They new they were getting close because of my hearts! They said they love following the hearts and knew they were off route yesterday because they didn’t see any! Hahaha. Steph pulled out her iPhone and took a picture of my hanging heart and said it was my best one yet! It was great seeing them again and it was fun walking with them the last 3 k to the next town. They were grabbing a place to stay at there and I went to the cafe get a refuel beer and see what else was out there. I was feeling amazing and the light and the sun felt amazing too. I ended up heading out in a little bit and moved out to the next town just a few kilometers away. I love walking later on because the sun is nice and the trail is open and everybody is in their albergues so the trail was mine! I leisurely walked along and made a few hearts here and there and also thought about my awesome friend Stacy Gibbs and how it was her birthday today! I wished her a happy birthday then drew her a heart. After that I felt inspired. I pulled out my notepad and as I walked I stopped here and there and jotted down some stuff. A few kilometers later I had written my best birthday poem ever! Happy birthday Stacy! I hope you like your birthday poem and picture!
Soon I was at the next town and checked into the Albergue which was a very nice one for the middle of a cow farm! I put my bag down and went to the showers. Taking a shower I heard the lion king song! This guy was whistling it while he was shaving his head! Hakuna matata! The circle of life! No the lion sleeps tonight! Yes the lion sleeps tonight! I love that song! We laughed and talked a while I finished showering. How cool is that that I was thinking about that whilst I was walking the last bit into town! After my shower I headed over to the bar for a dinner bocadillo which was huge for 3 euros and hung out for a bit. I saw the lion sleeps tonight whistler and a girl in the bar eating and we all ended up leaving together. I wanted to get some writing in so I went downstairs to the kitchen and started typing away. In come Herman a German guy waiting for a call from his girlfriend and then down comes Jose, the lion king whistler and the girl, Noelia! Jose brought some of his homemade cafe liqueur and I put some soft reggae music on and we chatted and laughed and it was a grand time! It was like a mini party! Noelia liked my hearts that I showed her and my birthday poem and she called me a romantic. I smiled and told her I’m trying to change the vibration of the world one smile at a time. After a few more homemade cafe liqueur sips I was done and headed up to bed with everyone else! Tomorrow is a new day and I’m so excited! Super close to Santiago! Whoop whoop! Until next time Pura Vida and buen camino and most importantly adventure on!
